Your expert guide to fake tan & laser hair removal

Did you know that self tan and laser hair removal don't mix? We explain everything you need to know about laser treatments and self tan.
Your expert guide to fake tan & laser hair removal

Do you dream of silky smooth skin all year around, with no ingrown hairs, razor rash or painful waxing? If this sounds like you, then laser hair removal is the perfect alternative to shaving and waxing, with permanent results!

Laser hair removal works by using a concentrated beam of light (laser) to target hair follicles. The pigment in the hair absorbs the light and converts it to heat, destroying the hair follicle responsible for hair regeneration to prevent hair regrowth.

For permanent results you will need to undertake 8-12 treatments initially, and only hair containing dark pigment is suitable. This means that blonde, white, grey or ginger haired babes will have to sit this one out.

Can you have laser treatments with fake tan on?

Laser hair removal works best when there is a strong contrast between the colour of your skin and hair, as the laser is unable to differentiate between skin pigment and hair pigment. This means that tanned skin is not suitable, real or fake!

Wearing fake tan to your laser appointment can also be dangerous, as tanned skin can attract and absorb the laser instead of the hair pigment which can burn your skin and cause blisters, redness or irritation.

How to prepare your skin for laser treatments

1. Remove fake tan

Ensure you remove all fake tan prior to your appointment, as technicians will thoroughly check the area being treated and can refuse service if any residue is found.  Grab your exfoliating mitt and get to work or for an extra helping hand, our Self Tan Remover can gently but effectively remove old self tan in minutes.

2. Exfoliate skin

Exfoliating your skin will assist in removing fake tan residue, as well as removing any dry skin cells which can form a barrier, preventing light from penetrating the unwanted hair. Exfoliating will also help in reducing ingrown hairs and bumps caused by shaving.

Using an exfoliating mitt or loofa will do the trick here, however if after super soft skin a body scrub is for sure the way to go! Our Exfoliating Body Scrub  contains sugar granules and pink french clay to  buff away anything on the skin’s surface, as well as replenishing any lost moisture so your skin will be in it’s best condition for laser hair removal

3. Shave areas prior

Shave the areas being treated 12-24 hours prior to your appointment. This allows the laser to easily target the hair follicles below the skin’s surface to minimise the risk of burns.

Can you fake tan following laser hair removal?
Yes absolutely! Fake tan only needs to be removed in the area’s you are treating, and can be reapplied after your appointment. It is recommended that you wait 2-3 days before reapplying your tan to avoid irritation as your skin can be sensitive after undergoing the treatment.
