Meet Ali Grant, the founder of Los Angeles based lifestyle and communications group, Be Social.
With a keen interest in broadcast and reading magazines, Ali knew that a career in news and communications would be the right one. She completed her journalism degree while interning (a lot) and found herself fitting right into the PR agency world. A shift in the industry to more digital initiatives saw a gap in an agency that was laser focused on influencer marketing, so Ali started her own. After launching Be Social in 2012 it has gone from stride to stride in digital-forward campaigns for lifestyle, wellness and beauty brands. We chat with the PR founder, influencer and thought leader while she is working from home during quarantine on career, beauty and what she has learnt during these testing times.
The best thing about beauty is?
My mom is in the dermatology field so I got into beauty at a young age and have always had a passion for beauty and skincare. I love how the beauty industry has blossomed over the past few years and made headway for some amazing female entrepreneurs. The boutique brands that have launched recently are genius!
Your favourite thing about your job is?
I love working with different brands and clients each day. There are new wins and challenges, so no day is the same! It makes it very exciting.
What has been the biggest ‘pinch yourself moment’ in your career to date?
There have been MANY! I’d say getting to work with brands that I’ve admired and been a fan of for a long time is always exciting… it’s full circle from a customer to client relationship.
What is your favourite Bali Body product to use any why?
I love a good tan but I try to stay out of the sun to protect my skin, so the self tanning products are my favorite. I love the Gradual Tan for everyday use, and then I use the Self Tanning Mousse when I have an event or am going on vacation.
Your biggest lesson learnt during quarantine?
Staying positive and grateful! There have been a lot of ups and downs, especially trying to navigate owning a business during an unprecedented time. I’ve learned to focus on the good… because there is tons of it!
What advice would you give younger girls aspiring to be an entrepreneur or work in the PR industry?
I always advise people looking to enter the industry to intern as much as possible. Work at different agencies/brands, discover what aspects of the business you like via trial and error, and gain knowledge by learning from those more experienced than you. Having internship experience on your resume will be very valuable when you’re ready to begin looking for a job.
What is your favourite place in the world and what makes it so special?
My hometown is San Diego and it will always have a special place in my heart! I love being close to the beach. Travel-wise, I’d have to say Bali. It’s so beautiful!
Your favourite motivational quote is?
This isn’t really a quote but I love the motto “Get out of your own way.” I think we all deal with a little bit of imposter’s syndrome, and I always try to remind myself that your worst enemy is self doubt. There will always be people who are smarter and more qualified then you, and you can’t let that stop you.
What does a ‘treat yourself’ moment look like to you?
Lately, working out has been a great form of self-care and escape. I find moving my body and getting active, whether an at-home class or an outdoor run, really helps clear my mind and improves my headspace.
